The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) hosts BECCS seminar together with Biorecro

On june 11th, the KTH Energy Platform arranged a seminar on BECCS technology at the university campus in Stockholm following an initiative by Biorecro and KTH, one of the leading institutes of technology in Northern Europe. Speaking at this event was Dr. Stephan Singer, director of global energy policy at WWF, Dr. Wolf Heidug, head of the CCS unit at IEA, Biorecro CEO Henrik Karlsson and KTH professor of Global Energy Climate Studies Semida Silveira. Prof. Ramon Wyss of KTH moderated the seminar.

The day, which comprised the official talks as well as a Q&A session with the audience and subsequent mingle, conveyed the overall picture of BECCS as an emerging technology with large potential in mitigating climate change. There was also discussion of the challenges faced by the technology, most notably the issue stressed by Prof. Silveira of how to scale BECCS up in the long term. Mr. Karlsson, on the other hand, stressed the urgent need for action that BECCS-proponents face in the short term, with the only operational BECCS-plant closing in 2016.
